I want to sing it from the treetops (but I’m not a great climber or singer so I won’t)! I’ll write about it instead.
My hunt for sustainable makeup has been a long one; three and a half years long to be exact! Part of this is because I believe that the most sustainable items are the ones you already own. So, I have been diligently using up the makeup that I have gathered over the last twelve years (yup, I truly did have makeup that old!). The second reason is that I have a fairly long and fairly tough list of criteria when it comes to makeup, so although I have been religiously researching, I hadn’t found one that ticks all the boxes… until now!
Here is the long list of what I need from my makeup:
- Quick and easy to apply – I wear makeup every day (except in lockdown!), but I don’t have the time or inclination for complicated application routines. I’m a five-minute morning-makeup kinda person.
- Natural-looking – I don’t really want people to know I’m wearing makeup, I want them to think I just look that good!
- Waste-free / eco-friendly packaging – this has proven to be a VERY tricky thing to find, and navigating some of the green-washing around sustainability and makeup has been tiresome.
- Palm oil free – this is extremely important to me. I’m also not ok with sustainably sourced palm oil. The palm oil industry at this stage is fraught with issues. I have hope that this will change in the future because the oil in itself is not the problem, but for now, it’s a no-go for me.
- Cruelty-free – I don’t think this one requires an explanation.
- Doesn’t pool in my not-so-fine lines – a newer and not-so-welcome addition to the list, but one I have had to accept. No one wants to look in the mirror at night and realise that all day people have been looking at lines of foundation congregations in their smile lines!
So as you can see, I’m a pretty tough customer when it comes to makeup. Hence the urge to climb trees and sing about my new buddy: ECO MINERALS.
Actually, I must confess, we weren’t complete strangers. I have been using Eco Minerals foundation for around three years now. I tried it because it was the only refillable foundation I could find and was over the moon to discover that it was the best foundation I’ve ever tried. Three years down the track and I (finally) had used up my old eyebrow makeup, so decided to give Eco Minerals another try. As with the foundations, you can buy samples, so you don’t have to invest in a full product without trying it out first and getting the colour right. It is also a multipurpose product, that can be used as eyeshadow. While I don’t generally wear eyeshadow, I love the idea of products that can multitask. Again, the product was a winner.
I am now in a committed relationship with Eco Minerals. They tick every item on my wish list, and my makeup bag almost exclusively contains their products. I have been impressed with every single item that I’ve tried. My favourites (other than those I’ve already mentioned) are the concealer, the blush, and the BB cream. The (vegan) kabuki brush has also been a game-changer when it comes to applying the foundation and blusher, I didn’t know what I was missing!
The eco refills are still one of the main things I love about Eco Minerals. The dry products (like the mineral foundation and blush) have eco-refills. These come packaged in completely compostable packaging. The refill costs less, contains the same amount of product, and the packaging is completely compostable. Wet products, like the BB cream, have refill cartridges, which save 40% of the plastic, and also cost you less. Eco Minerals also have a ‘colour chooser’ on their website to help you get your colours right.
Makeup is a very personal thing, and we all have different wish lists when it comes to what we put on our faces. But if your list is a little like mine, then consider this my personal recommendation to you: when you’ve used up what you have, head to Oh Natural, and check out Eco Minerals. Try some samples and discover for yourself what I’m already singing about. I am confident that it won’t be long until you and I are singing a duet, or maybe even starting a choir!
My top picks from Eco Minerals:
Eco Minerals
Eco Minerals Concealer comes in ‘light’ and ‘medium’. I use ‘light’ around my eyes, under my nose, and on any blemishes. It’s the best concealer I’ve ever tried.
I use the Flawless Foundation in ‘Nude Beige’. This was the first Eco Minerals product I tried, and it’s an absolute winner! I’ve been refilling the same pot for around three years.
$10 or less
I love the natural blush, which comes in two different shades, and is also refillable. I use the Kabuki Brush to apply it, and find I hardly need to use any product to get the look I’m after.
These Beauty Base Creams really smooth out skin tones, and I love how light it feels on my skin.
Eco Minerals
There are five different shades of these lovely lipsticks. I’m so impressed with how long mine lasts when applied!
Accessories
This brush is an absolute game-changer when it comes to applying the foundation and blush, I really didn’t know what I was missing out on. It applied the foundation and blush like a dream!
Check out the rest of the Eco Minerals range here and try their “Colour Chooser to help you find the right products for you!
