Why some natural deodorants cause rashes (and what we did differently)

Why some natural deodorants cause rashes (and what we did differently)

Natural deodorant has become incredibly popular in recent years - and for good reason. Many people want a gentler alternative to conventional deodorants, with simple ingredients and no aluminium.

But if you’ve ever tried natural deodorant and ended up with red, itchy underarms, you’re definitely not alone.

It’s actually one of the most common complaints people have when switching to natural formulas.

So what’s going on?

The ingredient behind many reactions

A lot of natural deodorants rely on bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) to neutralise odour.

Bicarbonate is very effective at controlling smell because it changes the pH of the skin, making it harder for odour-causing bacteria to thrive.

The downside is that bicarbonate is quite alkaline, while the skin naturally prefers a slightly acidic environment.

For some people - especially those with sensitive skin - this pH shift can cause irritation. That’s when you might notice redness, itching, or a rash after using certain natural deodorants.

A gentler approach

When we developed Oh Natural Soft Power Deodorant, we knew we wanted a formula that worked well but was also gentle on skin.

That’s why we chose to make it bicarb-free.

Instead of relying on bicarbonate, we focused on ingredients that help support the skin while still keeping you feeling fresh.

Because natural deodorant shouldn’t feel like a gamble.

Why deodorant can be part of your skincare ritual

At Oh Natural, we think about deodorant a little differently.

The skin under your arms is delicate - just like the skin on your face.

So it makes sense to choose products that treat it with the same care.

That’s why our deodorant has a soft, creamy paste texture that melts into the skin, rather than sitting on top of it.

It’s designed to feel comfortable to use every day, as part of your self-care ritual.

Because your skincare routine shouldn’t stop at your face.

What our customers are saying

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
When everyone tells you you smell nice, and the only fragrant thing you have put on is this deodorant, then that says a lot for this product.” - Carmen

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"Best Ever!!!!" - Maria

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
My fave thing tho has to be the deodorant! - Teegan

If you’re curious to try it

If natural deodorant has irritated your skin in the past, a bicarb-free formula can often be a much gentler place to start.

And if you’d prefer to test it out first, we also created a mini version so you can see how it works for you.

FAQs

Does natural deodorant stop sweat?
Natural deodorants don’t block sweat like antiperspirants do. Instead, they help neutralise odour while allowing the body to sweat naturally.

Why do some people get rashes from natural deodorant?
The most common cause is bicarbonate of soda, which can disrupt the skin’s natural pH.

Is bicarb-free deodorant better for sensitive skin?
For many people, yes. Removing bicarbonate can make formulas significantly gentler.
