Misty Day Plant Potions founder, Rachel Dawson, shares 4 favourite recipes

A bit about Misty Day Plant Potions creator, Rachel Dawson

I have lived and breathed health and wellness for as long as I can remember. From a very young age my mum used natural remedies whenever I had any kind of ailment and it just became “what you do”. When I was in my teens all of my friends were eating Maccas and I was making salads and chugging down herbal tea! I moved to Australia when in 2001 and not long after that started working in natural health, and then began my journey to becoming a nutritionist and herbalist.

What is the story behind the development of Misty Day Plant Potions?

I had worked in a big supplement company and had become disillusioned with the natural health industry. The wonder of nature, the magical qualities of herbs and all those traditional uses were being discounted in favour of “clinically researched” (usually one very flimsy study), patented, very expensive herbal extracts and tablets with more inactive tabletting agents than herbs. All those traditional herbs that were so intriguing to learn about, taste and love, were being taken away by big business to become just a sum of their parts and a tenuous marketing claim.

From this disillusionment came a real need to bring the traditional and magical aspects of my favourite herbs to people in a beautiful, accessible way with no inactive ingredients! So, I bought a few kilos of my favourite herbs and started mixing them up into pretty hued blends that all contained adaptogenic or tonic herbs (for stress- the modern malady). I tried them out on my friends and in my partner’s café and lo and behold people loved them! The rest is Misty history.

Do you have any favourite herbs or Misty Day brews?

I am all about the action, so with that in mind, my absolute hands down favourite herb is ashwagandha- its an ancient Ayurvedic herb which is an adaptogen that I have used for about 20 years!. Adaptogens are non toxic, safe herbs that bring the body back into balance and help to minimise the bodies response to any types of stress. The way that they do this is by “immunising” the body against stress- kind of like training the endocrine system not to overreact when stress inevitably comes along. We have an ashwagandha powder by itself and it is a key herb in our Bliss Brew – I have both of these daily and I definitely think the stress levels are way more manageable!

I’m also a little lazy, so don’t hate me that I used store bought dark chocolate. Medicinal chocolates ladies!!

How do I make them?

  1. Melt the chocolate in a bowl over hot water.
  2. While that is melting, chop the gojis roughly and crush some of the pistachios
  3. Split the melted chocolate into two bowls
  4. In one bowl – add 2 teaspoons of Lovers Brew and 1 teaspoon of rose powder (optional) mix through then add in a good handful of goji berries and a few pistachios. Pour into a tray and top with rose petals and whole goji berries. Refrigerate.
  5. In the other bowl – add 2 teaspoons of Shroom Brew and a drop of good quality peppermint oil (optional) to the chocolate and mix through. Stir through the crushed pistachios. Pour into a tray and top with peppermint leaves and pistachios
