How to have sex and please the planet too

By Kate Hall @ethicallykate

You’ve heard of eco-friendly makeup, skincare products, and clothing, but have you thought about eco-friendly ‘doing it’ too? The art of making love with mother nature on your mind (don’t tell you partner!), is usually taboo. But sex is natural. And we think it should be naturally good for the earth too.

Hey lovers, while you’re having sex, here’s how to please the planet too…

Wrap it the green way

If condoms are your preferred method of birth control and STI prevention, it’s best you choose vegan friendly, natural condoms that do good for your body and the planet. Condoms get up close and personal, so it’s important they’re protecting rather than harming.

Whatever you do: Never. Ever. Flush. A. Condom.

Our toilet drains are not meant for your sexy time waste. Instead, wrap your condom in a piece of toilet paper or paper towel, and put it in the rubbish bin. If your condom is 100% latex, it may biodegrade in your compost bin over a few years, but we’ll leave that experiment option up to you.

Our favourite:

The Jonny Vegan Condoms.

These handy helpers are made latex sourced from rubber plants, and aren’t covered in casein- a product derived from milk to make the latex smooth. Jonny condoms also come with a FabLIttleBag for responsible disposable of every condom. Simply place the used condom in a FabLIttleBag, and sleep easy knowing it will break down in landfill conditions in 12 months time.

Glide with natural lube

It’s horrific to think about, but lube is often made from petroleum based ingredients. No one wants that stuff up their hoo hoo or on their ding dong! Choose a lube that is free from nasty ingredients, to ensure safer sex. This stops you from flushing petroleum down the shower drain afterwards too.

Our favourite:

BONK Lube. Made in New Zealand from organic ingredients that actually nourish your skin, BONK lube is bound to go down a treat for everyone involved.

Clean the scene with reusables

There’s no beating around the bush: sometimes sex can be messy. Rather than using wasteful wipes, opt for a reusable towel or cloth. Wash it with eco-friendly washing detergents, hang it on the line, and save it for later.

Slip into eco Intimates

Seductively whispering “I’m wearing organic cotton and peace silk”… now that’s a turn on. Make sure you dress in clothes made from natural materials, and made by people treated fairly.

Our favourites:

Do the deed in eco bedding

Unless you’re an adventurer (go you!), you’re most likely making love in your bed. Bedding made with eco-friendly materials is crucial to upping your eco-friendly sex game. Plus, it can help you sleep better too. Choose linen, organic cotton, and hemp.

Our favourites:

Play around responsibly

Are sex toys your thing? Don’t worry, we aren’t about to recommend you give them up altogether. Thank goodness for you, eco-friendly sex toys exist.

What’s the difference? A nasty group of chemicals called phthalates are often added to sex toys to increase their flexibility and softness. These chemicals are harmful to our bodies and the environment. Eco-friendly sex toys do not contain phthalates, and have other eco-qualities like rechargeable batteries, eco-friendly storage boxes, and durable designs to ensure they last forever.

Our favourites:

Reduce your steamy showers

We know an hour in the shower with nothing but your lover and a hot stream of water sounds like heaven on earth, but water is a finite resource. While there are many in the world living without a clean and constant water supply, it’s best to keep shower sex to a minimum.

Make love and save energy

Nothing says ‘take me now’ better than a flickering candle in the corner. To reduce energy and save on your power bill, turn off the lights and light a candle. Choose a natural candle and stay away from paraffin candles that contain nasty chemicals you do not want to breathe in while doing the do.

Your sex life is yours. No one can tell you how to do it or when. But before you make moves to woo your partner, think of the planet. Sex is truly love making when your partner and the planet is loved on too.
